Qualifications

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

A. Education
• Associate's level coursework.
• Bachelor's degree in finance, business, counseling or social work preferred.
• Master's degree in cited areas preferred.

B. Licensure / Certification
• Licensed in the State of Michigan as a Clinical Social Worker (LMSW) if area of specialty.

C Special Skill / Aptitudes
• Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
• Effective communications skills and ability to work collaboratively with the treatment team.
• Ability to manage a variety of tasks and problems simultaneously. High level of initative, self-direction and good working knowledge of available financial programs in order to solve financial problems of patients.
• Experience with health insurance guidelines, programs and plans; patient and co-pay assistance programs; Medicare and Medicaid health plans; COBRA guidelines, and the ability to find new programs to assist patients. Thorough knowledge is preferred.

D. Experience
• Two years in medical field working with the financial needs of patients.
• Experience with Medicare health plans, COBRA regulations, Medicaid guidelines, PAP and co-pay assistance programs.

Description

1 Communicates and collaborates with the treatment team, the financial implications of medical care to both the patient and the health care provider. In collaboration with ordering physician, recommends treatment interventions that best fit the patient's medical and financial needs.

2 Interacts with Medicare, other insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and other financial assistance programs as an advocate for the patient.

3 Maintains strong working relationships with other members  of the treatment team.

4 Participates in activities to enhance professional development and maintain most current knowledge of the health care financial assistance programs.

5 Provides services throughout the continuum of care including outpatient, inpatient and other support/ancillary departments.

6 Responsible for continuous statistical and data collection for financial, quality and research purposes.

7 Performs other duties as assigned.
