Get a head start on the new year and prepare your ASH award application.

Each year ASH provides more than $12 million in career development and training awards to early- and mid-career hematologists. Understanding the impact that the global COVID-19 pandemic response has had on the economy and on medical research, the Society continues to provide support and much-needed education and training to our members around the world, including maintaining funding for all 2020-2021 awards.

The following award applications are due on January 15, 2021:

Minority Medical Student Award Program (MMSAP) – Offers mentored introductory biomedical research experience to underrepresented minority students in medical school.

Minority Hematology Graduate Award (MHGA) – Provides support and offers exposure to academic hematology for underrepresented minority doctoral students in their first, second, or third year of graduate school.

Minority Resident Hematology Award Program (MRHAP) – Provides support for underrepresented minority resident physicians in an internal medicine, pathology, or pediatric residency program to conduct hematology-focused research.  

Medical Student Physician-Scientist Award (Phy-Sci) – During this immersive, yearlong project for first-, second-, and third-year medical students, participants conduct laboratory, translational, or clinical hematology research. Application is due February 1, 2021. 

HONORS Award – This award contributes to the development of the next generation of hematologists by providing research funding for talented first-, second-, and third-year medical students as well as first- and second-year medical residents. Both short- and long-term projects are supported. Application is due February 16, 2021.

Minority Hematology Fellow Award (MHFA) – Encourages underrepresented minority junior researchers to pursue careers in academic hematology by providing research funding and mentorship over a two- to three-year period.

ASH-CIBMTR-ASTCT Career Development Award (New Partner Award)
ASH has partnered with the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT) on the ASH-CIBMTR-ASTCT Career Development Award to increase the number of hematologists from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine pursuing careers in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and cellular therapy.

Research Training Award for Fellows (RTAF) – Open to both MD and MD-PhD researchers between their second and fifth year of fellowship, this award is designed to encourage junior researchers to pursue a career in academic hematology.

Clinical Research Training Institute (CRTI) – This yearlong education and mentoring program for hematology fellows and junior faculty at academic medical centers offers education on clinical research methods, research collaborations, statistical analysis, and managing the demands of family and career. Letter of intent is due January 8, 2021.
