Telemedicine Policy Post COVID-19

Comments Due by September 20

Today (8/16/22), the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) issued a Notice of Proposed Policy (below). The notice outlines updates to MDHHS’ telemedicine policy once the federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) lapses. Currently, the PHE is set to expire on October 13, 2022, but the Federal Department of Health and Human Services has yet to issue the pledged 60 days' notice ahead of the termination of the PHE. The Biden administration has hinted it is open to extending the PHE once again.

The proposed policy impacts Medicaid, Healthy Michigan Plan, Children’s Special Health Care Services, Maternity Outpatient Medical Services, and MiChild. Updates cover appropriateness and documentation, prior authorization, reimbursement rates, and billing, behavioral health, dentistry, and school service programs.

Please note that this is not the final policy bulletin. Changes to this policy may be made based on comments that MDHHS receives.
