TIP #1 - Register for MAPS
If prescribing any schedule 2 to 5 controlled substance on or after June 1, 2018, Michigan prescribers must be registered with MAPS. Visit the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs' MAPS webpage.
TIP #2 - Query MAPS
On or after June 1, 2018, if prescribing any schedule 2 to 5 controlled substance in a quantity that exceeds a three-day supply, Michigan prescribers must complete a mandatory MAPS check prior to writing the prescription. TIP #3 - MDHHS Opioid Start Talking Form for Minors and Adults
When prescribing a controlled substance that is an opioid, Michigan prescribers must provide specified information such as the dangers and risks of using opioids and obtain a patient’s signature (or the parent or guardian if a minor). TIP #4 - Proper Disposal of Medications
In addition to informing patients about certain dangers and risks associated with opioids, prescribers are required to talk to their patients about proper and safe disposal of the opioids that are prescribed to them. A printable medication disposal tool available for download
