The Michigan Cancer Consortium (MCC) strongly supports participation in cancer clinical trials and has a goal of increasing the percentage of adults participating in cancer treatment clinical trials from 4.4% to 4.8% by 2020.

In the early 2000s, the MCC, MSHO and others supported the Michigan Working Group to Improve Cancer Outcomes, with a goal of increasing participation in cancer-related clinical trials by making payment for clinical trial services predictable. The Working Group succeeded in establishing a voluntary consensus agreement that provided the framework for third party payer coverage of patient care costs for those enrolled in clinical trials within the scope of the individual’s benefit plan.

Currently, the Affordable Care Act requires that insurers cover the cost of routine care for a person in a clinical trial. Over the last two years, the MCC’s Clinical Trials Workgroup has focused on the administrative burden related to enrolling a patient in a clinical trial when an insurer requires prior authorization.

The MCC created a cover sheet, which you are encouraged to download, for use in situations when elements of the clinical trial need clarification, such as when prior authorization is required. Click Here to download the Cancer Clinical Trials Cover Sheet

The cover sheet, consensus agreement, and other provider resources for cancer clinical trials are available at www.michigancancer.org.
