Ernie Balcueva, M.D.

Ernie Balcueva M.D.Dr. Balcueva was Past President of the Michigan Society of Hematology and Oncology in 2004-2006.  He remains on the MSHO Board of Directors since 1999 and has served as  the MSHO Foundation President since 2011.

Ernie was born and educated in the Philippines and immigrated to the United States in 1972, becoming a US citizen in 1986.  He accepted a rotating flexible internship at Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals, Internal Medicine residency at McLaren General Hospital and Medical Oncology and Hematology fellowship at Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine.

Since 1978, Dr. Balcueva has been an active member of the medical staff at Covenant HealthCare (St. Luke’s and Saginaw General Hospitals) and Past Chief of Staff and is currently at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital serving as Oncology Research Director since 2001.  In addition to being a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and Clinical Associate Professor at Central Michigan University College of Medicine.  Ernie is also a Principal Investigator for the Michigan Cancer Research Consortium/NCI Community Oncology Research Program at St. Mary’s Seton Cancer Institute.  He remains very active in the Saginaw medical community, having served as Past President and on the Board of Directors of the Saginaw County Medical Society.  He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Cancer Pain Initiative and the American Cancer Society, Saginaw Chapter. 

As a solo practitioner since 1978 and since joining Ascension St. Mary's Hospital in 2016, he has brought in the perspective and experience of community oncology practice to MSHO through the years, having served in consulting staffs at West Branch Regional Medical Center for 21 years and Huron Medical Center for 10 years.

Ernie’s wife, Leanne, a dedicated oncology nurse, has supported him in all of his participation in outreach activities.  The Balcuevas especially enjoy spending time with their four children, Elizabeth (husband, Lorne), Sarah, Daniel (wife, Alison) and Emily.  They are the very proud grandparents of their first grandson, Ethan Gregory.  They spend much of their time together at their retreat in Northport in the Leelanau Peninsula and are great MSU Spartan fans.

MSHO remains fortunate to have this very busy, enthusiastic, and devoted physician and leader.
